Devotional
Good morning friends.
You Are Not Yesterday
This is something I struggle with some days too. Maybe you do as well. Remember yesterday? Last week? Fifteen years ago? Yeah… I remember. Some memories are sweet, but others still try to weigh heavy on our hearts. They remind us of mistakes we made, things we wish we could take back, or even things we were accused of that were never true.
Here’s the thing though — as followers of Christ, we are not standing still. We are changing. We are being shaped. Scripture tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. That means God is actively doing something new in us. We are not defined by what we used to be.
Sometimes we say, “God doesn’t see what I did yesterday.” To be clear, God knows everything — but when we truly repent, He chooses to forgive and remove our sin from us “as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12). He doesn’t hold our forgiven sin over our heads. He doesn’t keep bringing it up to shame us. Instead, He calls us forward into new life.
So why do we hold on to the past?
That’s a good question. And honestly, I wish it had an easy answer. In one sense, it is easy — don’t hold on to it. But we all know that’s easier said than done.
Sometimes other people won’t let us forget. Not the lighthearted joking about something embarrassing, but the kind of judgment that keeps us trapped in who we used to be. They look at our today through the lens of our yesterday. That hurts.
Other times, we are the ones who refuse to let go. The enemy loves to remind us of our failures. He whispers lies that say we will never change. But if we’re being honest, he often doesn’t have to work very hard. We replay the memories ourselves, rehearse the shame, and we keep punishing ourselves long after God has already offered forgiveness.
I get it. I have things in my past that make me ask, “Why did I do that?” I also have things people have said about me that were never true, and sometimes that stings even more. But the truth is simple — we have all sinned. We have all fallen short. Yet Romans 8:1 reminds us that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. None. Not a little. Not sometimes. None.
Today — and every day — give yourself some grace. Learn from your yesterdays, but don’t live in them. As Paul says in Philippians 3:13–14, forget what is behind and press on toward what is ahead. You are not your past. You are God’s workmanship, still in progress.
So say it with confidence:
“I am not who I was. I am who God says I am.”
If God has forgiven you, then it’s time to start walking in that freedom. His opinion is the only one that matters. Always.
Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for Your mercy and Your patience with me. You know my past, my failures, and even the things that still weigh on my heart. Help me to truly receive Your forgiveness and to stop condemning myself for what You have already covered with grace.
Teach me to let go of shame and to move forward in the new life You have given me. Give me strength when others remind me of who I used to be, and remind me through Your Spirit that I am a new creation in You.
Help me to learn from my past without living in it. Shape my heart, renew my mind, and guide my steps today.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
