Devotional:

Today I want to share something I’ve struggled with — or maybe more honestly, something I just don’t fully understand yet. I hear many people talk about how they feel God speaking to them or how they experience the Holy Spirit in powerful, overwhelming ways. And while I respect that and believe their experiences are real, mine has looked different.

As I’m still early in my evangelism journey, what I say today may grow and change. But for a long time I wondered, “Am I doing something wrong?” I prayed about it. I searched Scripture. I even had conversations about it. What I’ve come to learn is that God works differently in each of us.

Most of my devotionals — honestly about 95% — start with just a feeling. A small nudge. A topic on my heart. Then I begin writing and the words simply flow. Later I clean them up so they’re easier to read, but I always make sure the message is what I truly meant to say. The other times, maybe 5%, I just have a thought without words. So I take time to reflect, pray, and process until the message becomes clear.

God does not always shout.

Here’s what I’ve realized: God does not always shout. In fact, Scripture shows us that He often speaks in a still, quiet way. When Elijah expected God in dramatic displays, he instead heard Him in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:11–12). Jesus also reminds us that His sheep hear His voice (John 10:27). That doesn’t always mean an audible voice or overwhelming emotion. Sometimes it’s simply direction. Sometimes it’s peace.

For me, that peace is where I recognize the Holy Spirit most clearly. When I’m walking in what God is calling me to do — writing, sharing, encouraging — there is a deep calm in my spirit. Colossians 3:15 tells us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. That word rule can mean to act like an umpire, guiding our decisions. When something brings confusion, anxiety, or a heavy knot in my stomach, I pause and seek God again.

I truly believe God uses many different ways to reach us. He can use sermons, conversations with friends, moments of reflection, or even unexpected situations that suddenly make truth clear. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust in Him rather than lean only on our own understanding. When we do that, He promises to direct our paths — even if the guidance feels subtle.

So if you’ve ever felt left out because you don’t experience God the same way others describe, please hear this: you are not alone. And you are not less spiritual. The fruit of the Spirit includes peace (Galatians 5:22–23). Sometimes that quiet assurance is the very evidence that He is leading you exactly where you need to be.

I may never have dramatic “wow” moments like some people share. But I know God is using me. I see the doors He opens. I feel the peace He gives. And that is enough to keep moving forward.

God is always speaking. Sometimes we just need to slow down long enough to recognize the way He is choosing to speak to us.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You that You speak to each of us in ways we can understand. Help me not to compare my journey with anyone else’s. Teach me to recognize Your voice in the quiet nudges, in Your Word, and in the peace You place in my heart. Guide my steps and give me confidence that I am where You want me to be. Help me stay faithful even when I don’t fully understand. In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
