Devotional

This verse was on my mind this morning — Psalm 23:4.

It reminded me of something very real about the life we are living. Yes, there is a LOT of good in this world. There is beauty, there are amazing blessings and there are moments of joy that can take your breath away. But at the same time, this world is still a dark valley in many ways. We face evil, temptation, hurt, sadness, loneliness, greed, lust, anger, jealousy — sometimes all in one single day.

Living for Jesus is not always sunshine and roses. It is also war.

Jesus Himself told us in John 16:33 that we would have trouble in this world. Following Him does not mean a problem-free life. It means a protected life. It means a guided life. It means we never walk through the valley alone.

Every morning we wake up, we are stepping onto a battlefield. That is why Ephesians 6:11–12 tells us to put on the armor of God. We are not just drifting through life — we are standing firm in faith. We are resisting the enemy’s lies. We are choosing truth over temptation, peace over anger, humility over pride, and love over bitterness.

The war is not against people. That is important to remember.

Sometimes the enemy wants us to see other people as the problem. But Scripture teaches us that our real battle is spiritual. Sin affects the human heart, and brokenness can lead people to hurt one another. Yet Jesus calls us to respond differently. Romans 12:21 reminds us not to be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil with good.

That means we still love.
We still forgive.
We still help carry one another’s burdens, just as Galatians 6:2 teaches.

Yes, there is darkness in this world. Evil does lurk. Temptation does try to pull us back down. But the message of Psalm 23 is not fear — it is confidence.

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley…”

Notice it says through.
Not stuck, not abandoned, and not defeated.

Through

Because God is with us.
God’s presence comforts us. His guidance corrects us. His protection surrounds us. He fights battles we cannot even see. And at the same time, He calls us to stand strong and fight for what is right — not with hatred, not with violence toward others, but with faith, truth, prayer, and obedience.

We can enjoy life. We should enjoy life. The joy of the Lord is real and powerful. But we must also stay spiritually alert. This is not a playground for believers — it is a mission field.

You are not just surviving the valley.
You are walking with the Shepherd.

And because He walks with you, you do not have to fear evil.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for walking with me through every dark valley. Help me to remember that I am never alone, even when life feels like a battle. Strengthen me to stand firm in faith and to put on Your armor each day. Guard my heart from fear, bitterness, and temptation. Teach me to love others the way You love me, even when it is hard. Give me wisdom to recognize the enemy’s traps and courage to choose what is right. Let Your peace and joy lead me as I walk through this world.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
