How do you look at other people?

A lot of times, we are harder on others than we are on ourselves. We understand our own intentions. We know our struggles. We know the battles in our minds and hearts. So when we mess up, we usually give ourselves grace, patience, and understanding.

But when someone else messes up?
We become suspicious.

“They aren’t a real Christian.”
“I can’t believe they did that.”
“They shouldn’t have said that.”

Sometimes we judge an entire person off one moment, one post, one clip, one mistake, or one misunderstanding. But Matthew 7 reminds us to examine our own hearts before we start tearing apart someone else’s life.

Sin is sin.

The truth is, many times we struggle to give grace to people who sin differently than we do.

Maybe someone said something that hurt you, but they truly didn’t mean it the way it came out. Maybe they were trying to help, trying to encourage, or trying to speak truth, but it came out wrong. You know what it feels like to be misunderstood because you’ve probably done the exact same thing before.

Yet when the roles reverse, forgiveness suddenly becomes harder.

Why?

Because we know our own intentions, but we become suspicious of everyone else’s.

That’s where trust, grace, and spiritual maturity come in.

If someone is genuinely trying to follow Jesus, leading others toward Him, and there is fruit growing in their life, maybe it’s time to stop defining them by one mistake. John 13:35 says people will know we belong to Jesus by our love for one another. Not by how quickly we cut people off.

Stop following the world

This world has become obsessed with canceling people instead of restoring people.

But Galatians 6 says when someone falls, those who are spiritual should restore them gently. Gently. Not harshly. Not proudly. Not self-righteously.

That doesn’t mean we ignore sin or pretend wrong is right. Accountability matters. Truth matters. Boundaries matter. But so do mercy, patience, forgiveness, and understanding.

Look at the overall fruit in someone’s life. Are they pursuing God? Are they trying to grow? Are they pointing people toward Jesus? Are they willing to repent, learn, and keep moving forward?

Because if the answer is yes, maybe they don’t need condemnation from you. Maybe they need encouragement, prayer, honesty, and grace.

Proverbs 27:17 says iron sharpens iron. But sharpening is not a painless process. There is friction. Heat. Pressure. Sparks. Growth is uncomfortable sometimes. Healthy friendships, marriages, churches, and relationships will have hard moments.

But we give up too easily when friction shows up.

Real love works through things. Real grace gives room for growth. Real forgiveness understands that none of us have arrived yet.

God has shown us mercy over and over again. We should not withhold that same mercy from others.

Before assuming the worst about someone, stop and remember how many times God has patiently worked through your own failures too.

Choose grace over suspicion.
Choose restoration over cancellation.
Choose love over pride.

That is how we reflect Jesus.

Prayer

Lord, help me see people the way You see them. Forgive me for the times I have judged others harshly while excusing my own failures. Give me wisdom to know the difference between accountability and condemnation. Teach me to lead with grace, mercy, patience, and love. Help me not to give up on people too quickly, especially those who are genuinely trying to follow You. Let my life reflect the forgiveness You have shown me. Shape my heart to restore, encourage, and build others up instead of tearing them down. Help me grow through friction instead of running from it. Thank You for never giving up on me. In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
