The Holy Pause

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.”
James 1:19

Let’s be real for a minute.
Even the strongest believers — the pastors, the deacons, the teachers, the mature Christians — we’re all still human.
And being human means we are naturally the opposite of this verse.

Quick to speak.
Quick to react.
Quick to get mad.
Slow to listen.

Oh… am I the only one?
Come on — it’s safe to admit it.
God already knows the truth anyway.

Here’s a secret that might surprise you:
Anger itself isn’t a sin.
Even Jesus got angry.

It’s not the emotion.
It’s the response inside that emotion.

That’s why God tells us:

  • Be quick to listen
  • Be slow to speak
  • Be slow to get angry

Because when we don’t listen…
we react instead of respond.

When we speak too fast…
we say things we don’t mean.

When we let anger lead…
we hurt people we love
and break things that are hard to repair.

But when we pause —
even just a few seconds —
everything changes.

Before you speak, take a step back.
Before you react, take a breath.
Before you snap, slow down your spirit.

If more people lived out this one verse,
we would see fewer fights,
fewer broken relationships,
and fewer nights lying awake replaying the argument in our heads.

And I should add this too:
Be honest when you speak.
Half the time what we say isn’t even the real issue —
it’s just what’s sitting on the surface.

Take a beat.
Gather your thoughts.
Speak the truth, not the reaction.

Is it easy? No.
I struggle with this.
I fail often.
But I never stop trying —
and that’s all God asks of any of us.

Keep trying.
Keep growing.
Keep choosing peace over reaction.
You got this… because God’s got this.

🙏 Prayer

Father,
Teach me to slow down my reactions and listen with wisdom.
Help me guard my words, calm my anger, and see situations through Your eyes and not my emotions.
Make me quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger —
not just to honor You, but to love people better.
Grow patience in me where I’m weak,
and let Your Spirit lead my responses.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
