The Fruit That Grows
Verses Used
- Galatians 5:22–23
Devotional
Galatians 5:22–23 gives us one of the clearest pictures of what a life surrendered to Jesus should look like. Paul calls these qualities the fruit of the Spirit. Notice he says fruit, not fruits. These characteristics are connected and grow together as the Holy Spirit works in our lives.
Many people spend their lives trying harder to be better. They strive to be more loving, more patient, or more self-controlled through their own strength. While discipline has value, Galatians 5:22–23 reminds us that true spiritual fruit is produced by God’s Spirit, not by human effort alone.
When we stay close to Jesus, the Spirit begins changing us from the inside out. Love starts replacing selfishness. Joy remains even when circumstances are difficult. Peace settles our hearts when life feels uncertain. Patience grows where frustration once ruled. Kindness and goodness become natural responses. Faithfulness strengthens our commitment to God and others. Gentleness replaces harshness, and self-control helps us overcome temptations that once mastered us.
This doesn’t happen overnight. Just as fruit takes time to grow on a tree, spiritual growth is a process. There will be seasons when we feel like we’re making little progress. Yet God is faithfully working in us, shaping us more into the image of Christ every day.
One way to examine our spiritual health is to look at the fruit our lives are producing. Are people experiencing Christ’s love through us? Do they see peace in our storms? Are we showing patience when things don’t go our way? These questions are not meant to bring condemnation but to encourage us to remain connected to the One who produces the fruit.
The beautiful promise of Galatians 5:22–23 is that we do not have to manufacture these qualities ourselves. The Holy Spirit is already at work in every believer. Our responsibility is to walk with God daily, spend time in His Word, pray faithfully, and allow Him to transform our hearts.
As we stay rooted in Christ, the fruit will come. Others may notice it before we do. What begins as small changes eventually becomes visible evidence of God’s work in our lives. The world is full of people searching for hope, peace, and genuine love. When the fruit of the Spirit is evident in us, we become a living testimony of God’s grace and power.
So today, don’t focus only on trying harder. Focus on staying closer to Jesus. The closer we walk with Him, the more the fruit of the Spirit will grow naturally in our lives.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit. Help me not to rely solely on my own strength but to trust Your work within me. Grow in me the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Show me areas where I need to surrender more fully to You, and help me stay connected to Christ each day.
Let my life reflect Your character so others can see Your goodness through me. Continue shaping me into the person You have called me to be.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
