Devotional

Good morning friends.

Today’s devotional goes to myself just as much as it does to you.

I’ve been a people pleaser most of my life. As I’ve gotten older, I do it less and less. Not because I don’t want to help — I absolutely do. I still help where and when I can. But I’m learning something important: helping people and living to please people are not the same thing.

1 Thessalonians 2:4 says we are not trying to please people, but God, who tests our hearts.

That verse cuts straight through it.

As Christians, it’s easy to get wrapped up in helping everyone. Serving is good. Loving others is a command (Matthew 22:37–39). But when we start sacrificing obedience to God, our peace, or our health just to keep people happy, something is off.

We cannot fill others if our cup is empty.

Because of my old people-pleasing habits, I ended up with what I call “when-they-need-me friends.” Meaning, I don’t exist unless they need something. I only hear from them when there’s a problem to fix, a favor to do, a gap to fill.

Now let me be clear — I’m not talking about busy seasons. Life gets busy. Sometimes you don’t talk for a while. But there’s still mutual care. They check in. They see you.

I’m talking about the ones who only show up when they need you.

And this is where I’ve had to draw the line.

I still love them and care about them. I still hope and pray they find Jesus. But I’ve stopped enabling the pattern of being their tool.

Galatians 1:10 asks a hard question: “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?” If we live for human approval, we will always be exhausted. There will always be someone disappointed. Someone expecting more. Someone pulling at our time and energy.

God does call us to serve. Jesus Himself served constantly. But even Jesus stepped away to pray. He didn’t heal every single person in Israel. He only did what the Father directed (John 15:5 reminds us we can do nothing apart from Him).

We are not the Savior. Jesus is.

We are messengers.

We guide people to the Light. The light shines through us but, we are not the Light.

Proverbs 4:23 says to guard your heart, because everything you do flows from it.

If we let everyone drink from our cup without boundaries, eventually there’s nothing left to pour.

And here’s the truth that’s hard to swallow: sometimes people don’t want relationship — they want access.

Access to your time., your skills and your kindness.

But access without appreciation leads to depletion.

So today, let’s turn off the running faucet.

Not in bitterness. Not in pride. But in wisdom.

Pay attention to where your love is going. Ask God where He wants your energy invested. Some soil produces fruit. Some soil only drains the seed.

You cannot help or save everyone. Only Jesus saves.

Our role is obedience. His role is transformation.

So if you’ve been running yourself dry trying to keep everyone happy, take a breath. You are allowed to have boundaries. You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to protect your peace.

Serve God first.

And let Him guide you to the people who are truly ready to receive what He is pouring through you.

Have an amazing day, friends.

God bless.

Prayer

Lord,

Search my heart. Show me where I’ve been living for people’s approval instead of Yours. Help me serve from a place of obedience, not insecurity.

Teach me healthy boundaries. Guard my heart from resentment and exhaustion. Lead me to the people You truly want me to pour into.

Remind me that I am not the Savior — You are.

Help me love others well without losing myself in the process.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
