📖 Daily Devotional — Roots Come Before Fruit
Verse
“Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him.”
— Colossians 2:7 (NLT)
Reflection
When we plant a young tree, it doesn’t look like much. Just a slim branch with a tiny root ball. We put it into the ground and… nothing seems to happen.
But underground, everything is happening.
Before a tree grows upward, it grows downward.
Before branches form, roots anchor.
Before fruit appears, the foundation strengthens.
The roots spread far wider and deeper than the tree itself so the wind can’t blow it over — so it can survive drought — so it can stand firm no matter what storm hits.
We are the trees.
Christ is the soil.
And when God plants us, we don’t start with fruit.
We start with roots.
This is why life can feel stagnant for a season.
This is why blessings seem delayed.
This is why progress feels slow.
Not because nothing is happening —
but because the most important growth is happening where no one can see.
Roots grow when we:
- pray
- open Scripture
- repent
- surrender
- forgive
- obey
- and keep trusting even in the dirt
Some believers never grow because they never water their roots. They believe in Jesus, attend church, but never dig deep. They never anchor. They never surrender the soil of their heart.
But when we let God grow our roots, He prepares us for increase.
Whatever we lose during root-season, He restores with more — often double.
So if you feel buried today, remember:
You’re not buried.
You’re planted.
Roots come before fruit.
Even in the dirt — praise the One who grows the roots.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the seasons of unseen growth. When I feel stagnant or frustrated, remind me that You are building my roots. Help me to be faithful in “watering”—to stay in Your Word, to pray, and to trust You. Give me the strength to praise You, even from the dirt, knowing that You are preparing me for the fruit You have promised. Amen
