Happy Memorial Day.
Today is a day that we remember the fallen. The American heroes who gave their all for the American people. This is not political., this is history, this is honor, and this is remembrance.
In September 1814, Francis Scott Key and John S. Skinner helped secure the release of Dr. William Beanes from the British. But because the British were preparing to attack Baltimore, Key and Skinner were detained on a truce ship and witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry. After about 25 hours of shelling, Key saw the American flag still flying “by the dawn’s early light,” and that sight inspired what became The Star-Spangled Banner.
And yes, there was a larger flag. Major George Armistead had ordered a flag so large the British could see it from a distance. That flag became a symbol that Fort McHenry had not surrendered.

The Star-Spangled Banner:
O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
That song did not come from comfort. It came from battle. It came from smoke, fear, sacrifice, and a flag still standing.
And today, we remember that freedom has never been free.
Jesus said in John 15:13 that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for others. Memorial Day points us to that kind of sacrifice. We remember men and women who did not come home, who gave their lives so others could live free.
And as believers, we do not worship a nation. We worship God. But we can still thank God for the country we live in. We can still pray for America. In Jeremiah 29:7, God told His people to seek the peace of the city they were living in and pray for it. Even in Babylon, He told them to pray.
So yes, we should pray for America. We should pray for our leaders, like 1 Timothy 2:1-2 says. We should pray for peace, righteousness, repentance, protection, and revival.
This is our country. This is where God has placed us. Whether we agree with every politician or not, that is not the point today. Today, we remember the cost. We honor the fallen. We thank God for the freedom to worship, to live, to speak, and to praise the name of Jesus openly.
Have an amazing and happy Memorial Day. But remember what this day stands for.
God bless you.
God bless America.
And may America turn her heart back to God.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the men and women who gave their lives for this country. Help us never take freedom for granted. Teach us to honor sacrifice, pray for our nation, and use our freedom to glorify You. Bless the families who are grieving today. Bring comfort, peace, and strength. Lead America back to You. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
