One Day at a Time
Verses:
Matthew 6:34: So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
Exodus 20:8–10: Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.
Psalm 46:10: Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.
Lamentations 3:22–23: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.
James 4:13–15: Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit. How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.
Devotional
Life today is busy.
Overwhelming busy.
It feels like the world runs 50 hours a day, 10 days a week. There’s always something to do. Family schedules. Appointments. Jobs. Laundry. Dishes. Notifications. Responsibilities.
Full throttle becomes normal.
And then one day… we’re burned out.
When we burn out, we’re no good to anyone — not even ourselves.
God never designed us to live in constant overdrive.
He gave us the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8–10) not just as a religious ritual, but as a reminder: breathe. Rest. Trust that the world keeps spinning without you grinding every second.
Matthew 6:34 reminds us not to worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow has its own concerns. You can only live today.
The laundry will still be there tomorrow.
The dishes will survive the night.
Your to-do list will not disappear if you rest for a moment.
Yes, I know — your brain says, “But I need it done now.”
I get it.
But here’s something my pastor said recently that hit home:
With everything in life, there are two categories:
- Things you can change.
- Things you cannot change.
If you can change it — do what you can today.
If you cannot change it — let it go.
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”
Sometimes obedience looks like action.
Sometimes obedience looks like stillness.
God taught me to relax and breathe by flipping my life upside down. It wasn’t comfortable. I wouldn’t have chosen it. But I would not trade what I’ve learned this past year for anything.
I still have days where I wish things were different.
But I also know they will be.
One day at a time.
That’s all we’re given.
That’s all God asks.
Prayer
Father God,
Help us slow down.
Help us trust You with tomorrow.
Teach us the difference between what we can change and what we must release.
Give us wisdom to act when needed and peace to rest when it is time to rest.
Remind us that You are God — and we are not.
Thank You for new mercies each morning.
We will walk today faithfully, and leave tomorrow in Your hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
