The Promise Series – Day 3 – God’s Promise of Identity

📖 The Promise Series — Day 3

God’s Promise of Identity

Verse

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
1 John 3:1

Reflection

One of the greatest battles people face is not over behavior, but over identity. Many spend their lives believing they are defined by what they’ve done, what’s been done to them, or what others have said about them. Labels stick. Words linger. Past failures whisper lies about worth and value. But God’s promise of identity cuts through every false name and replaces it with truth.

Scripture says we are not merely tolerated by God—we are lavished with love. That word matters. It means poured out, abundant, excessive, and intentional. God does not reluctantly call you a child; God proudly claims you. Your identity is not something you achieve. It is something you receive. When you belong to God, you no longer have to earn your place—you already have it.

Many people live exhausted because they are trying to prove who they are. They perform, compare, strive, and hide, hoping one day they’ll finally feel accepted. But identity in Christ reverses that pressure. You don’t work for identity—you work from identity. You don’t obey to be loved; you obey because you are loved. When God calls you a child, it changes how you see yourself, how you face struggle, and how you walk through life.

Identity doesn’t mean life becomes easy. It means life becomes anchored. Storms may still come, but they no longer decide who you are. You are not your addiction. You are not your past. You are not your worst mistake. You are not your diagnosis or your doubts. You are a child of God—chosen, seen, and held.

If you’ve felt lost, overlooked, or unsure of your worth, this promise is for you. God’s promise of identity restores dignity, confidence, and peace. When you know who you belong to, you finally understand who you are.

Altar Call — Come to Jesus

If you’ve been searching for identity in approval, success, or relationships, Jesus offers something deeper and lasting. In Christ, you are not abandoned—you are adopted. Today is an invitation to come home and receive the identity God has always intended for you.

Prayer

God,
I come to You tired of wearing labels that You never gave me. I believe that through Jesus, I am called a child of God. I receive Your love and the identity You speak over my life. Heal the places where lies have taken root. Replace shame with truth and fear with confidence in who You say I am.

For everyone reading this today—restore identity where it has been damaged, bring peace where confusion has lived, and remind us daily that we are known, loved, and chosen. Help us walk boldly in the truth of belonging to You, no longer defined by our past but shaped by Your grace.

Amen.
