Devotional
Many people think God doesn’t have a sense of humor. I honestly believe He does. When I look at life — really look at it — I see moments that are just too perfectly timed, too ironic, too creative to be accidents. I see situations where God seems to gently smile at us, teaching us something while also reminding us not to take ourselves so seriously.
In Genesis 18:12–14, Sarah laughs when she hears she will have a child in her old age. From a human standpoint, it sounded ridiculous. Impossible. Honestly, kind of funny. But God wasn’t offended by her reaction — He used it. In fact, the promised son would later be named Isaac, which means “laughter.” That alone shows something beautiful about God’s nature. He didn’t just fulfill the promise; He wrapped it in a reminder that even doubt can turn into joy.
Sometimes we picture God as distant or stern, but Scripture shows a fuller picture. Psalm 2:4 even says that God laughs. Not in cruelty, but in confidence — knowing that no plan against Him will stand. There is a strength in His laughter. A reminder that fear and chaos don’t have the final say.
Life itself reflects this balance. Ecclesiastes 3:4 tells us there is “a time to weep and a time to laugh.” God created both. He wired us with the ability to find humor in the middle of hard things. A deep, genuine laugh can lift a heavy heart. Proverbs 17:22 says a cheerful heart is like medicine. That’s not just poetic language — it’s truth we experience. Joy has healing power.
I think sometimes we forget that Jesus Himself lived among people, shared meals, walked dusty roads, and experienced real human moments. John 10:10 says He came so we could have life more abundantly. That abundance includes joy. It includes lightness. It includes the kind of laughter that reconnects us to hope.
Believing God has a sense of humor doesn’t make Him less holy — it actually shows how personal He is. He knows how to reach us. Sometimes He speaks through quiet conviction. Sometimes through unexpected blessings. And sometimes through moments that make us shake our heads and smile because only He could have arranged it that way.
Maybe today you need that reminder, Maybe you’ve been carrying stress, pressure, or disappointment or Maybe life feels heavy. It’s okay to be serious about faith, but we don’t have to be weighed down all the time. God invites us into a relationship that includes joy. A relationship where we can laugh, breathe, and trust that He is still in control.
Look for the small moments. The irony. The unexpected timing. The situations that turn around in ways you never saw coming. Those might just be gentle reminders that God is not only powerful — He is also wonderfully creative.
And sometimes, He laughs with us.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being closer than I realize. Thank You for creating joy, laughter, and light even in the middle of serious seasons. Help me not to carry burdens You never asked me to hold. Teach me to trust You more, to notice the small blessings, and to receive the gift of joy without guilt. Fill my heart with a cheerful spirit and remind me that abundant life includes peace, hope, and even laughter. In Jesus’ name,
amen.
