Devotional
I am quitting church!?
No—not me. But I know a lot of people who have.
And honestly… I understand why.
I grew up in church. I spent countless hours there—before services, during services, and hanging around afterward. Church was just part of life. But as I got older, I started noticing something that shook me a bit.
Hypocrites.
People saying one thing on Sunday and living completely differently the rest of the week. And because my faith wasn’t deeply rooted yet, I did what a lot of people do…
I blamed God.
Looking back now, I realize something important.
That was my mistake.
I once heard a pastor say something that stuck with me. Ironically, his name was Luke too. He explained it like this:
Imagine you have a favorite restaurant. You’ve eaten there many times and always loved it. But one day you go in, place your order, and the kitchen completely messes it up.
Your food is wrong.
Now imagine responding by saying,
“That’s it! I’m never eating here again!”
Or even worse:
“That’s it! I’m done eating out forever!”
That would sound ridiculous, right?
You’d simply talk to the waitress, get the order corrected, and move on.
But somehow church is one of the only places where a bad human experience makes people blame the Creator.
Why do we blame God for human mistakes?
One thing I’ve learned while renewing my faith over the past few years is this:
God has never let me down.
People have.
A lot of people struggle with questions like:
“How could a loving God allow pain?”
“How could God allow children to suffer?”
“Why doesn’t God fix this situation in my life?”
The truth is… we don’t always know why.
But we do know something important. Scripture tells us that God works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). That doesn’t mean He causes the pain. It means He can redeem it.
Pain exists because of sin and free will.
God gave humanity the ability to choose. We can choose love, kindness, obedience… or we can choose selfishness and harm. And unfortunately, humans often hurt each other.
God doesn’t remove free will, because then love wouldn’t be real.
Joshua said it clearly: “Choose this day whom you will serve” (Joshua 24:15).
We get to choose.
And yes, you hear people say all the time,
“God’s plans will always happen.”
That’s true.
But here’s something people don’t always think about.
God has a mission for each of us—but if we refuse it, He can raise someone else up to carry it out.
We still have the choice to walk away.
Or the choice to step in.
Maybe I got a little off track here in this devotional. But maybe that’s because someone reading this needed to hear it.
If you walked away from church because someone hurt you… I understand.
If you stepped away from faith because of hypocrisy… I understand that too.
But don’t blame God for what broken humans did.
God hasn’t moved.
He’s still there.
Still waiting.
Still calling you home.
Jesus even told us that in His Father’s house are many rooms—many mansions prepared for those who belong to Him (John 14:2–3).
That promise is still there.
And claiming it is simpler than people think.
Believe in Jesus.
Confess Him as Lord.
Trust that He died and rose again for you (Romans 10:9).
Following Christ isn’t always sunshine and rainbows.
But I can tell you from experience…
It’s so much better than trying to do life without Him.
Love you all.
God bless.
Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for never giving up on us even when we misunderstand You. Thank You for Your patience when we blame You for things that were never Your doing.
Help us remember that people may fail us, but You never will. When hurt or disappointment pulls us away from faith, remind us that You are still there waiting for us to come back.
Strengthen our hearts so our faith is rooted in You—not in the actions of imperfect people. Help us choose You daily and follow the purpose You have placed on our lives.
And for anyone who has walked away because of pain, I pray You gently guide them back to You.
Thank You for Your grace, Your love, and the promise of a home with You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
