Devotional
Mustard seed faith is powerful, but a lot of people misunderstand what Jesus was teaching.
When Jesus said, “O you of little faith,” many people hear that as, “Your faith is too small.” They think God is upset because their faith is not big enough, strong enough, or loud enough. But the deeper issue is not just the size of the faith. It is the staying power of the faith.
Faith can be small and still be real. Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. That means God is not asking you to manufacture some massive emotional feeling before He moves. He is asking you to trust Him and keep trusting Him.
The problem is that many people have faith that burns bright on Sunday but starts fading by Monday. They leave church encouraged, fired up, and ready to believe God. But then bills show up. Stress shows up. Health problems show up. Family issues show up. Work gets heavy. Life gets busy, complicated, and messy. By Wednesday, that big Sunday faith can feel like it has burned off.
Stay in the word.
That is why we need the Word every day. Romans 10:17 reminds us that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. We cannot live off yesterday’s meal forever. We need daily bread. We need daily prayer. We need daily surrender. Not because God is hard to please, but because the world is loud, and our hearts need to be reminded of what is true.
Mustard seed faith does not mean weak faith. It means even small faith, when placed in a big God, is enough. The key is to not let it run out. Keep believing. Keep praying. Keep showing up. Keep opening the Bible. Keep trusting God when life does not make sense.
In Matthew 6:30 and Luke 12:28, Jesus corrected people for having little faith when they were worried about provision. He was not shaming them. He was calling them back to trust. He was reminding them that if God cares for the grass of the field, He will care for His children.
So whether your faith feels like a mustard seed or feels massive today, keep it alive. Keep it steady. Keep it rooted in God. Faith is not about pretending life is easy. Faith is saying, “God, I still trust You,” even when life is hard.
Galatians 6:9 tells us not to grow weary in doing good, because in due season we will reap if we do not give up. That is longevity. That is endurance. That is faith that lasts.
It is not just the size. It is the length. It is the trust. It is continuing to believe God when the feeling fades. And Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith it is impossible to please God. So keep your faith, even if it feels small. Small faith in a faithful God can still move mountains.
Prayer
Lord, help me to have faith that lasts.
Not just faith for Sunday, but faith for Monday, Wednesday, and every hard day in between. Teach me to trust You when life gets heavy, when things feel uncertain, and when my emotions fade. Help me stay in Your Word, stay in prayer, and stay close to You. Even if my faith feels small, let it remain steady. Strengthen my heart and keep my trust rooted in You. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
