When we hear the word idol, most of us picture a statue or a false god that people bow down to. But idols aren't always what we think they are. The Bible warns us many times about false idols, and they can be much more subtle than carved images. An idol can be a person, a hobby, a career, money, entertainment, or even an activity. Really, anything that takes first place in our hearts above God can become an idol.
I'll be honestβI struggle with this myself. Sometimes I wonder if something in my life has quietly become an idol. But if I'm being real, I think my biggest struggle isn't necessarily loving something more than God. It's that life itself gets so busy that it steals the time I should be spending with God.
And yes, that's on me. I won't make excuses for it.
I also don't think I'm the only one who struggles with this. Life moves fast. Work, family, responsibilities, errands, billsβthey all compete for our attention every single day. Before we know it, another day has gone by without spending time with God.
God is gracious, patient, and incredibly forgiving. God understands the pressures of life because Jesus lived among us. That doesn't mean God wants us to drift away, but it does mean God lovingly invites us back every single time. There is never a moment when it's too late to come back into God's presence.
Devotional
Don't stress over trying to meet some imaginary minimum requirement with God. The Bible doesn't say you have to spend a certain number of minutes each day to earn God's love. Instead, God simply desires our hearts. The more time we choose to spend with God, the stronger that relationship becomes.
Pray whenever you can. Sometimes prayer is long and deep. Other times it's as simple as saying, "God, thank You," while you're driving to work.
Read the Bible whenever you can. Listen to an audio Bible on your commute. Read one chapter before bed. Spend a few quiet moments in the morning with your coffee. Even five minutes is better than no minutes.
Take a moment every day to simply be still and say, "Speak to me, Lord." Then listen. God always hears us, and God answers according to perfect wisdom and timing. Sometimes the answer comes immediately. Sometimes it comes later. Sometimes the answer is different than what we expected. But God is always faithful.
One of the enemy's greatest tricks isn't always getting us to hate God. Sometimes it's simply keeping us so distracted that we slowly stop making time for God. That's what makes busyness so dangerous. It often doesn't look sinful at all, and that's exactly why it's so effective.
So take a few minutes whenever you can. While driving. During lunch. Sitting outside. Even sitting on the toilet! (Yes, I said it! π) God already sees you wherever you are. What matters isn't where you spend time with Godβit's that you choose to.
Take an honest look at your life today. Is there something consuming all of your attention? Has something quietly become more important than your relationship with God? If so, don't carry guilt. Simply bring it to God and let God help you put everything back where it belongs.
Put God first, and everything else finds its proper place.
I love you all.
God bless.
Prayer
Father, thank You for loving us even when life gets busy and we lose our focus. Help us recognize anything that has taken Your place in our hearts. Give us the desire to spend time with You each day, not out of obligation, but because we love You. Teach us to seek You first in every part of our lives. Thank You for Your patience, Your grace, and Your faithfulness. We love You, Lord. In Jesus' name,
Amen.
