Devotional

One of the most overlooked commands in Scripture is found in James 5:16: confess your sins to one another and pray for one another. This doesn’t mean you have to tell the whole world every mistake you’ve ever made. You can if you choose to, but that’s not the point of the verse.

The point is that God never intended for us to fight our battles alone.

Not only are we called to confess our sins to God (1 John 1:9), but we should also find trusted, Christ-following friends who will pray with us, encourage us, and help keep us accountable. Hidden sin often becomes a place where the enemy attacks us. He uses shame, guilt, and secrecy to keep us trapped. But when sin is brought into the light, its power begins to weaken. Ephesians 5 reminds us that light exposes darkness, and darkness loses its grip when it is exposed.

I am not a perfect man, nor will I ever be this side of heaven. I still struggle. I still fall short. One of my biggest battles as a single man has been lust. It’s something I have to fight often. If I’m being honest, sometimes I win that battle and sometimes I don’t. But over the past several months, I’ve seen God helping me gain more victory and freedom than I once thought possible.

But that’s not my only struggle.

When I get frustrated and make a mistake, my default response can sometimes be self-criticism. Thoughts like, “You’re stupid,” or “Why did you do that?” or “When will you ever learn?” can creep in. Sometimes I find myself judging someone else’s sin before checking my own heart. Sometimes frustration gets the best of me and foul language slips out.

The truth is that none of us are perfect.

We all have things we wrestle with. We all have areas where we need God’s grace.

And here’s something I’ve learned: you cannot overcome sin on your own. You need Jesus. If you could fix yourself by your own strength, you would have already done it. Real freedom comes through Christ. He breaks chains that we cannot break ourselves.

When I look back at who I was one year ago—or even five years ago—I’m amazed at what God has done in my life. Yes, I still get frustrated when I fall short. But instead of only focusing on where I’m failing, I try to remember how far God has brought me.

I can honestly say, “Thank You, Lord.”

Thank You for the growth.

Thank You for the freedom.

Thank You for not giving up on me.

Philippians 1:6 reminds us that the One who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion. God is still working on me, and He’s still working on you.

Without God, I truly believe I would not be here today. He saved me, turned my life around, and opened my eyes. Yet I remain a man who desperately needs Him every day. I still need prayer. I still need grace. I still need Jesus.

And because of that, I refuse to let the enemy hold things over me through fear and secrecy.

You don’t have to tell me your sins. But I encourage you to find a trusted Christ-following friend. Someone who loves Jesus, loves you, and will pray with you. Bring those struggles into the light and seek God together.

Freedom begins where honesty meets God’s grace.

I love you all. Have an amazing day.

God bless.

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for Your grace, mercy, and patience with us. Thank You that we do not have to carry our burdens alone. Help us to be honest with You and with trusted believers when we struggle. Give us the courage to bring our sins and weaknesses into the light instead of hiding them in shame.

Lord, thank You for the work You are doing in our lives. Even when we fall short, remind us that You are not finished with us. Strengthen us to resist temptation, grow in holiness, and walk in obedience to You each day.

Help us encourage one another, pray for one another, and point each other toward Christ. Thank You for never giving up on us and for continuing to transform us by Your grace.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
