Ask the Better Question

Ask the Better Question

Verse

‘2Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,#1:2 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in verses 16 and 19; and in 2:1, 5, 14; 3:10, 12; 4:11; 5:7, 9, 10, 12, 19. whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. ‘

James 1:2-3

Reflection

It’s natural to complain when things feel unfair, delayed, or heavy. Complaining is often the first language of frustration, but it rarely leads to clarity or growth. Scripture invites a different response—not denial of pain, but a shift in posture. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” God invites the question, “What are You forming in me through this?”

God doesn’t waste hard seasons. Pressure exposes what’s already there, but it also strengthens what’s being trained. When trials hit, God may be teaching endurance, humility, patience, or trust—things that don’t grow in comfort. Complaining keeps the focus on relief; asking God shifts the focus to transformation.

This doesn’t mean the struggle is easy or that feelings should be ignored. It means choosing curiosity over bitterness. When you ask God what to learn, you move from being stuck in the moment to being shaped by it. Growth often begins the moment the question changes.

Action

Today, pause the next time frustration rises and ask God out loud: “What do You want me to learn here?” Then sit quietly for two minutes and listen without rushing for an answer.

Prayer

God, it’s easy to complain when things don’t go the way I expect. Help me slow down and ask better questions. Give me eyes to see what You’re teaching and courage to grow through it instead of resisting it. I want transformation, not just relief. Amen.
