When Rejection Makes God Feel Distant

Devotional:
Rejection. We all go through it.
And it sucks.
It’s hard, it hurts badly, and after you experience enough of it, something starts happening inside you. You start wondering if maybe there is something wrong with you. Maybe you aren’t enough. Maybe you said the wrong thing, did the wrong thing, cared too much, or weren’t worth staying for.
People can leave you with questions they never answer.
Why did they walk away? Why did they stop talking to me? Why wasn’t I worth an explanation? Why did they seem to care one day and disappear the next?
I wish I had answers for those questions. I don’t.
Those unanswered questions are hard because our minds usually try to fill in the blanks, and we rarely fill them with something kind about ourselves.
But rejection is a human experience. Many times we feel like God is rejecting us. This is something completely different.
Hebrews 13:5 reminds us that God will never fail us and never abandon us. Jesus also said in John 6:37 that anyone who comes to Jesus will never be rejected.
That matters when God feels quiet.
Quiet Does Not Mean Absent
Sometimes we pray and hear nothing.
We ask God what is happening, why something fell apart, why someone walked away, or why another door closed—and there doesn’t seem to be an answer.
I’ve asked those questions too.
Maybe God is silent during some seasons of waiting. Maybe God is speaking and we are struggling to hear through all the hurt, disappointment, fear, and noise. I don’t pretend to know the answer to that every time.
But I do know this: God’s apparent silence is not proof of God’s absence.
Psalm 34:18 says God is close to the brokenhearted. That means when rejection has crushed something inside you, God has not moved farther away. Scripture says God is near.
Isaiah 41:10 tells us not to be afraid because God is with us, strengthening us and holding us up.
People may let you down.
People may hurt you.
People may reject you.
People may leave without explaining themselves.
God is not people.
God’s character does not change because somebody else treated you badly.
You May Never Know Why
I don’t know why those people rejected you.
I don’t know why they hurt you.
And I don’t know why certain people have hurt me either.
Sometimes we never get the explanation we thought we deserved.
Maybe they didn’t like you. Maybe you reminded them of something from their past. Maybe they were afraid of repeating something they had already lived through. Maybe they were carrying pain you never knew existed.
And yes, sometimes it really isn’t about you.
That doesn’t make ghosting right. It doesn’t make cruelty acceptable. It doesn’t mean we pretend somebody didn’t hurt us.
Forgiveness is not pretending something was okay.
Grace is not saying somebody’s behavior didn’t matter.
You can acknowledge that someone hurt you and still refuse to carry bitterness toward them.
We have to remember that people are fighting battles we may never see. You may never know what someone was thinking when they walked away. You may never understand why they handled things the way they did.
So give them grace.
Not because what happened was necessarily right, but because you don’t know everything they were carrying.
And then give the questions to God.
Trusting God Without Understanding
Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us to trust God rather than depending entirely on our own understanding.
That verse gets harder when we actually have something we desperately want to understand.
I want answers.
I want things to make sense.
I want to know why certain relationships happened, why they ended, why some prayers seem unanswered, and why some people came into my life only to leave wounds behind.
But faith sometimes means trusting God while the question mark is still there.
Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works everything together for the good of those who love God and are called according to God’s purpose.
That doesn’t mean everything that happens is good.
Rejection isn’t always good.
Heartbreak isn’t good.
Being abandoned without an explanation isn’t good.
But God can still work through it.
Maybe someday you will understand part of the reason.
Maybe you won’t.
Either way, your hope cannot depend on finally getting an explanation from the person who hurt you.
Your peace has to come from something stronger than their answer.
And that something is Jesus.
So if you’re sitting there wondering why someone rejected you, why God seems quiet, or whether something is wrong with you, remember this:
People’s rejection does not define God’s opinion of you.
Their silence does not mean God has gone silent forever.
Their leaving does not mean God left with them.
Keep trusting God through the hurt, through the pain, through the questions, and through the things you still don’t understand.
Jesus is still with you.
God has you.
And when everything else feels uncertain, that is still enough to keep taking the next step.
Prayer:
God, rejection hurts, and sometimes I don’t understand why people leave or why certain things happen the way they do. I have questions I still don’t have answers for, and sometimes Your silence feels heavier than I know how to handle.
Help me remember that silence does not mean You have rejected me. Help me trust Your character when I cannot understand Your plan.
Heal the places in me that rejection has wounded. Keep me from believing that someone else’s decision determines my worth. Help me forgive the people who hurt me and give them grace without pretending what happened didn’t matter.
When I don’t understand, teach me to keep trusting You. Remind me that You are near, You have not abandoned me, and You are still working even when I cannot see it.
