Devotional:
In John 15, Jesus paints a picture that every believer can understand. A branch cannot survive on its own. It can't produce fruit by trying harder, working longer, or pushing itself to grow. The branch only thrives when it stays connected to the vine.
That's exactly what our relationship with Jesus is supposed to look like.
A lot of us spend our days trying to be stronger, wiser, more patient, or more faithful through our own effort. We think if we just try harder, we'll finally become the person God wants us to be. But Jesus says something completely different. In John 15:5, Jesus says, "Apart from me you can do nothing" (NLT). That's not meant to discourage us—it's meant to free us.
The pressure isn't on us to produce spiritual fruit by ourselves. The goal is to stay connected to Jesus.
Staying Connected Daily
Think about how quickly a phone battery dies when it's disconnected from its charger. It may work for a while, but eventually it runs out of power. Many believers live the same way spiritually. We spend a few minutes with God and then try to operate on yesterday's strength for the rest of the week.
Jesus invites us into something better.
Abiding means remaining. Staying. Dwelling. It means talking to God throughout the day, spending time in Scripture, praying honestly, and learning to trust God in both good seasons and hard ones. It's not about perfection; it's about connection.
Sometimes God also prunes things from our lives, just as Jesus describes in John 15:2. Pruning isn't punishment. It's preparation. God removes things that hinder growth so that healthier fruit can develop. That process can be uncomfortable, but it comes from God's love, not rejection.
Jesus goes on to say in John 15:9 that we are to remain in God's love. Many people spend their lives trying to earn what God has already offered through Christ. We obey God not to gain God's love, but because we already have it.
When we stay connected to Jesus, fruit naturally begins to appear—love, patience, kindness, faithfulness, and a growing desire to follow God's ways. Real spiritual growth is not manufactured; it's cultivated through relationship.
Today, instead of asking, "How can I try harder?" ask, "How can I stay closer to Jesus?"
The fruit will follow.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for being the true Vine. Forgive me for the times I've tried to live on my own strength instead of staying connected to You. Help me remain close to You today through Your Word, prayer, and obedience. When You prune areas of my life, help me trust Your purpose and Your love. Produce fruit in me that brings glory to God and points others toward You. Thank You for never letting go of me even when I struggle. Help me abide in You every day. In Jesus' name,
Amen.
